Busy South Shields junction transformed by trees and landscaping after council makeover

Work to improve the appearance of the Crossgate and Westoe Road intersection in the city has now been completed under a plan by the South Tyneside Council to improve the area.

As part of the renovation work that began in April, trees and shrubs were planted in stone raised beds at the corner of the intersection next to The Cask Lounge bar.

As part of improvements to the area across from South Shields Town Hall, landscaping and paving have also been put in place with a path running between them.

As the work went on, a South Tyneside Council spokeswoman said: “Following work on improving the intersection between Crossgate and Westoe Road to accommodate new bus routes into the city center, landscaping is under way, including tree and shrub planting and paving around an expanded area to accomplish. “

It’s the latest in a series of landscaping projects that have changed the face of downtown South Shields over the past few years.

The Crossgate intersection has been redesigned with landscaping and trees.

The former office building of PDQ Homes was demolished in early 2018 as part of the second phase of the South Shields 365 redevelopment master plan to make way for new bus routes into the city center, which were needed for the new South Shields Transport Interchange.
