Environmental cleanup is done at old Central School; landscaping work underway

The environmental remediation at the old Ottawa Central School site is complete. All that remains to be done is landscaping. Nicor Gas spokeswoman Jennifer Golz says none of what has been done is the start of the YMCA construction project. That is not expected until autumn.

The fence stays on the former school premises, while the grass gets a good hold. Nicor Gas and ComEd removed coal tar from a company that used coal to produce gas on site before both companies were formed.

The former Central School site in Ottawa has been cleaned up and landscaped. Coal tar stayed in the ground after several decades of gas production that began more than a century ago.
