Fire at Lower Valley landscaping materials business Sunday afternoon briefly closes Parker Bridge Road | Lower Valley

Parker Bridge Road was briefly closed late Sunday afternoon when firefighters put out a fire in a nearby commercial building.

No one was injured in the fire at Waupaca Materials at 81 N. Track Road. Waupaca Northwoods, known as a garden center, has a Wapato address but is located in the unincorporated community of Lower Yakima Valley in Parker between Union Gap and Wapato on US Highway 97. It sells gardening and landscaping materials such as soil, bark and mulch, stone , Sphagnum, and sand, according to the Waupaca Northwoods website.

The Yakima County Fire District 5 firefighters were dropped off just before 2:30 p.m. and a rooftop fire showed up, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page.

Fire chief Kevin Frazier said bark material burned and got onto a conveyor belt and inside, where it ignited a couple of large bags of the product. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and started putting out hot spots.

It’s the third fire on North Track Road in less than a week. On Tuesday, Lower Valley firefighters responded to two suspicious fires at 625 N. Track Road in about two hours. They first responded to a fire in a trailer that evening, then returned less than an hour after leaving the scene to find a barn that was completely engulfed.

According to a press release from Yakima County’s Fire District 5, people driving past 625 N. Track Road around 7:15 p.m. reported that a trailer was on fire. The trailer was not in use and had no power, the owner told officials.

Less than an hour after leaving the source of the fire, callers reported that a barn at the address was on fire. Firefighters found the barn completely engulfed when they arrived. The Yakima County Fire Brigade Marshal is investigating.
