Highest sustainability honour awarded to Expo 2020’s engineering, infrastructure, landscaping, public spaces and more

E.Eight infrastructure projects at Expo 2020 in Dubai were awarded the highest rating as part of the internationally recognized CEEQUAL Sustainability rating for civil engineering, an important milestone in Expos aim to become one of the most sustainable world exhibitions of all time.

The ratings under CEEQUAL – the world’s first sustainability assessment, assessment and certification system for best practices in infrastructure projects – range from a “Pass” at 30 percent to “Excellent” at 75 percent, rated on a number of sustainability topics, including country Use, ecology, traffic, resilience and pollution. Expo 2020 is the first project in the Middle East to be awarded the “Excellent” CEEQUAL rating.

The Al Wasl Plaza, the heart of Expo 2020, which connects all three subject areas and acts as a meeting point in a shady microclimate that is nowhere else in Dubai, has exceeded the highest threshold of the award with 91.6 percent. The grid and steel construction of the 130 x 67.5 meter Al Wasl dome, which surrounds the square and creates the largest 360-degree projection surface in the world, achieved even higher values ​​of 93.6 percent.

The Expo 2020 certificates are one of the largest awards that CEEQUAL has presented at a single location worldwide. They represent the highest recognition in the civil engineering industry and underline how the event has integrated sustainable design principles into buildings, infrastructure and landscaping.

CEEQUAL was developed by the UK-based Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the wider industry and launched in 2004. It is now part of the BREEAM system family within BRE Global and combines the world’s leading methods for sustainability assessment for buildings, master planning and infrastructure over the entire built asset life cycle.

The CEEQUAL Excellent Awards extend over the public realm of the Expo, the Al Wasl Plaza, parks, shadows and other infrastructures on the 4.38 km² site.
