How your landscaping website can do your recruiting for you
Recruiting new employees is one of the biggest challenges facing turf and landscaping business owners today. Whether you are looking to attract sales reps, salespeople, or managers, it is important that you find ways to differentiate your business. After all, you are one of many local lawn and landscaping companies actively looking for new employees. It is important that you give these potential recruits a reason to choose you.
It starts with your website, says Chad Diller, director of customer success at sales and marketing agency Landscape Leadership. For the past 10 years, Landscape Leadership has helped transform lawn and landscaping company websites into recruiting tools that generate hundreds of applicants each year. Diller says there must be a few must-haves on your website if you want to do the same.
First and foremost, you need a strong career center site. This will serve as a hub for all of the other functions that can help you recruit leads. You also need to pay more attention to the photography and video that you use on this careers page. This is an opportunity to introduce real team members and show job seekers exactly the people they will be spending time with when they apply and are hired.
Diller says videos can go a long way in showing recruits what the job will be like.
“It helps show team members in action, collaborate, and interact with customers,” he says. “This also gives team members an opportunity to talk about what they love about their job. These team testimonials can really go down well with a recruit. ”
Diller says listing open positions is also helpful, but you need to be careful not to clutter this page. If you have a lot of open roles, you may need to consider how to break this information down in an organized way.
“For one of our clients, Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape, we created this job posting page to get more detailed information about the vacancies and highlight the features of the job,” says Diller. “We also added more videos in case it was overlooked on the main page.”
Connect with applicants

Diller says the companies that are most successful at recruiting are the ones that go out of their way to connect with recruits. Another way to accomplish this is through stories from team members. Recruits will be more interested in hearing from actual employees about what it’s like to work there.
In this sense, testimonials from team members can also provide this value. These 2-3 sentence testimonials are a great addition to your main career center page. They are even more meaningful when combined with a photo of this employee.
Finally, Diller says writing helpful articles about career counseling is another valuable way to connect with recruits. This is a place to study topics such as workplace diversity, training, transition from other industries and work culture. All of these will help you establish yourself as a caring and compassionate employer willing to help.
And don’t forget to include Spanish recruiting content on your website. You might even consider creating a completely separate Career Center page in Spanish. It is important to keep in mind that some potential recruits may not be fluent in English.
According to Diller, meeting recruits where they are right now is much more likely to pique their interest and find new employment.
“If you do everything right, you will ensure that more and more applicants will come in – who can turn into your most valuable team players,” summarizes Diller. “An added bonus is that they are also likely to be recruiting friends to work for you. That way, your hard work can pay off. ”
