Kathy’s Gardening Guide: Shade Landscaping

By Kathy Esfahani

Since Florida is the Sunshine State, we always talk about plants that need full / mostly sun. It can be difficult to find pockets for shady plants, or you may not know what to plant in a fully shaded area. The same rule still applies: you need the right plant in the right place!

These tips will help you manage your shady gardens:

Know your shadow: Understanding the amount of shade and indirect light the area receives is the greatest key to plant success in this area. All plants need sunlight to survive. So look for areas with indirect sunlight instead of dark areas with damp soil.

Light and color: Just because it’s a shady area doesn’t necessarily have to be a green plant. There are a few varieties, such as caladiums, that are a nice color to add to a shady garden.

Altitude mix: A mix of ground cover and medium / tall plants creates depth for a lush, shady garden.

Some shade-loving plants: Asian jasmine, border grass, cast iron plant, begonias, caladia, coleus, ornamental ginger and much more!

Flower of the week: Purslane
