A landscaping will soon be carried out at the Cenotaph at Memorial Park in Shaunavon.
Brenda Waldron of The Shaunavon Legion explains the work that needs to be done.
“All of the landscaping, as well as all of the paving stones around the cenotaph, is old and uneven, and we must properly drain the cenotaph or else it will undermine all the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been put into it. It has to be valued and it must be done professionally. “
Waldron says Legion members will be removing any old paving stones and a contractor has been hired to replace the paving stones, put in a 20% grade, and bring the grass corners to sidewalk level. Then a concrete slab is poured and planters are added.
The total cost of the project is $ 20,000, half of which has already been raised through donations and grants. The work is expected to be completed by the Boomtown Days in July.
The Legion will sell the old cobblestones at a later date and will continue to receive donations. Donations can be made at the Shaunavon Town Office.
The Legion will also donate the first 100 cobbles to the Hillcrest Cemetery Committee and they will be used to protect the mulch around the new trees in the cemetery.
