SAN FRANCISCO, Jul 14, 2021 – (BUSINESS WIRE) – As temperatures rise across the state, Californians continue to look for ways to prep their homes before the peak of the wildfire season. Pacific Gas and Electric’s (PG&E) new digital video series provides the simple steps every homeowner needs to know to better protect their home and family. In the fifth installment of 7 Saturdays to a More Fire-Resistant Home, viewers get an in-depth look at different types of fire-resistant plants and trees and the safest places to plant them. The show is co-hosted by David Hawks, Senior Public Safety Specialist at PG&E, and Alicia Mason.

The first four episodes of the 7 Saturdays series received nearly 150,000 views, and there are still a few episodes to watch. Customers can stream the show on PG & E’s on-call website, the Safety Action Center, which provides information to help customers protect their families, homes and businesses in the event of natural disasters and other emergencies.

Former CAL FIRE boss at Butte Unit, Hawks believes that fire retardant landscaping is one of the most important parts of preparing your home and property for wildfire. According to Hawks, there are no 100% fireproof plants or trees, but some that have adapted over generations to be more fire-resistant. “For plants, it’s best to pick herbaceous or non-woody plants, and for trees, those that are deeply rooted, have thicker bark, and have leaves instead of needles,” Hawks said.

In this episode, viewers learn:

  • The types of plants and trees that are fire resistant

  • The safest places to plant plants and trees on your property

  • What to consider when planting immature trees

You can now watch the fifth episode (and the four previous episodes) in the Safety Action Center (safetyactioncenter.pge.com). New episodes are released every week for seven weeks.
