Montgomery County-based landscaping company helps make ‘Field of Dreams’ game a reality

In the iconic baseball movie “Field of Dreams,” Ray Kinsella tears up his cornfield in response to a mysterious voice directing him to build a baseball field on his farm in Iowa.

Three decades after the film debut, Major League Baseball hired BrightView, a Montgomery County landscaping company to build a temporary ballpark in the same corn field in Dyersville. It will take place on Thursday evening Field of Dreams game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees.

BrightView Landscape, based in Blue Bell, was contracted to build the field and install the bullpens, fences and foul polls.

The project was completed last year as the game was originally scheduled for last August. But the COVID-19 pandemic has postponed the game until this season.

In the meantime, BrightView had to upgrade its irrigation systems to maintain the baseball field and corn fields behind the outfield fence, KYW reported.

BrightView was founded in 1939 and was given its current name in 2014. The company specializes in landscaping, development, design and upgrading of commercial and residential properties. BrightView also offers water and snow management, as well as sports turf and golf course maintenance.

BrightView’s other notable projects include the Independence Mall in Philadelphia and the Little League World Series fields in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The company is responsible for landscaping, tree maintenance, and water management at Independence National Historical Park.

BrightView, which opened a new corporate office in 2019, employs more than 18,000 people in the United States.

For those who haven’t seen the movie, Field of Dreams tells the story of a farmer who builds a baseball field that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends. The 1989 film was based on WP Kinsella’s 1982 novel entitled “Shoeless Joe”.

With greats like Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta, “Field of Dreams” was nominated for three Oscars.

“If You Build It They Will Come” is one of the most iconic lines in the film, and it’s safe to say that thousands of baseball fans will be coming to Iowa Thursday to see the very same field that BrightView built.
