Die-hard fans arrived half a block from the adult bookstore and across from the crematorium more than two hours before the punk rock concert opened in northeast Philadelphia.

Many had seen Laura Jane Grace the night before playing at the Crossroads live music venue in North Jersey. But everyone in line thought that this particular gig was very special.

“I’ve seen her in a lot of different places,” said Emily, a Florida resident who had come specifically to see Grace, “but never in a landscaping company parking lot.”

Next to her, a fan named Paul put his thoughts. “I once escaped from what looked like this,” said the York, Pennsylvania resident, adding, “A phenomenal trolling job.”

Others had similar observations. “Historically,” said one person. “Shakespearean,” said another. “Amazing,” said a third, “and epic.”

Holding a concert at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping – the small family business that gained international fame for hosting a post-election Trump campaign press conference – was the brainchild of Dave Kisleiko of Dave Kiss Presents, a booker for Fishtown’s Kung Fu Tie, where Grace plays Sunday nights .

The concept came to Kisleiko when the manager of the opening act Brendan Kelly asked him to look for outdoor locations. Then he asked Kelly who could be a suitable partner for the bill.

“Laura and are very old friends,” Kelly explained. “When Dave asked about someone with star power, I said, ‘What about one of my best friends who is a transgender anarchist?’ ”

Everyone agreed to the idea and the tickets were sold out after 17 minutes.

The carefully crafted plan failed at the last minute after the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections investigated a lack of approval lawsuit. Working with local lawmakers, Total Landscaping’s Sean Middleton convinced city officials to offer a one-time exemption.

On Saturday, the press and about 200 fans entered the infamous parking lot, past a Philly Drinkers booth selling branded T-shirts and a Funk Brewing tent selling cans of their Four Seasons-inspired Lawn Jawn IPA became.

Brendan Kelly was up first and started joking: “I thought this was a hotel!” he said.

When Laura Jane Grace took the stage around 2 p.m., she noticed the weirdness of the situation.

“That was pretty surreal, but then the drone came down from the sky” – she said in relation to a press camera – “and man, that’s really … well, that’s very 2021.”

There was enough room for plenty of physical distance while the crowd sang along. People also took advantage of a selfie station equipped with a shelf of garden tools and once confiscated Rudy Giuliani’s life-size photo prop for a crowdsurfing excursion.

Meanwhile, Middleton and his colleagues from Total Landscaping watched in amusement.

“I like to try to imagine what it’s like behind the scenes at Four Seasons,” said Kelly after leaving the stage. “Some of the people who work here have to say, ‘Yo, we’re used to cutting grass and stuff.”

Yes, said Middleton, who holds the position of sales director for Total Landscaping. “Hit the nail on the head.”

The week before the concert, Dave Kiss Presents offered free tickets to anyone who had a Total Landscaping tattoo. Ethan Savage, 23, accepted the offer.

Savage has been a Laura Jane Grace fan for a while, they said. “She was pretty important to me when I came out,” said Savage. “Your music was a stepping stone.”
