This Oceanfront Property Gets a Landscaping Makeover

A house on the North Shore has a nice waterfront location.

This stunning home on Sunset Beach on the north coast of O’ahu is a surfers dream home and a healthy place for homeowners and their children to enjoy both indoors and outdoors.

Navigating from the side of the house to the back yard is easier with the LED lighting on the beach and the existing tiki flashlights. Steve’s Gardening Service installed puka lava paving stones on the lawn to keep the mud down and prevent falls.

The oceanfront property wasn’t always this picture perfect. The overgrown vegetation, loose gravel and massive boulders of the original landscape did not fit the lifestyle of today’s homeowners. They needed a location that was ideal for their active family and that could withstand the coastal climate.

On both sides of the house, easy-care plants that can cope with the coastal climate nestle against the perimeter, including tall areca palms for additional privacy.

To fix this, Steve Dewald from Steve’s garden service was commissioned to bring Steve Mechler’s landscape design to life – so that the family can fully enjoy their outdoor spaces.

“It was just loose pebbles from the river,” says Dewald of the area. “It was like walking on marbles. It was dangerous and slippery. “

Directly in front of the kitchen are cedar plant boxes with fresh herbs and lettuce that the homeowners have planted.

The front of the house was concreted to create a courtyard that the homeowners chose to make it easier for the children and reduce maintenance. The drainage for the house included drain chains – as part of the original house design – and Dewald and his team installed a new drainage system with multiple river wells that allow water to seep back into the ground.
